Dr. Lester W. Butts Scholarship Program

The Dr. Lester W. Butts Scholarship was established by the Metro Atlanta Chapter SSUNAA in 2001. Dr. Butts was a 1949 graduate of Savannah State University, the second president of the Metro Atlanta SSUNAA, the first principal of Douglass High School (Atlanta school system), and the Superintendent of Atlanta City Schools in 1990. He served in the Metro Atlanta Chapter from the 1960’s until his death in 2000. Since the chapter's inception, we have awarded scholarships to more than 150 students from the metro Atlanta area.

BENEVITY Charitable Donations

We are thrilled to announce that the Metro Atlanta Chapter is now able to accept employee/corporate donations from all companies that use Benevity to facilitate charitable giving. These donations will be directed towards supporting The Dr. Lester W. Butts Scholarships, which play a vital role in the mission of our chapter by helping deserving students pursue their educational goals at Savannah State University.

Here's how you can participate:

1. Check to see if your employer uses Benevity for Charitable Donations

2. If so, search for "Savannah State Metro": Simply search for "Savannah State Metro" within the Benevity platform.

3. Select Metro Atlanta Chapter - SSUNAA: Choose our chapter from the list of options to designate how much you would like to donate and the frequency of your donations.

4. Corporate Matching: Some companies offer matching donations at the end of the year, so be sure to check if your employer participates in this program.

Additionally, Benevity allows participants to log volunteer hours, which are often converted into corporate donations to the organization of your choice. Chapter meetings, recruitment events, community service, and chapter event planning all count as eligible volunteer hours. You can also choose to allocate those converted proceeds to our chapter. Don't forget to set a monthly reminder to log your volunteer hours in Benevity!
